Denver's vaunted defense hasn't bothered Newton thus far
Entering Sunday's game against the Denver Broncos, there were questions whether Cam Newton would be able to be effective against a stifling Broncos' defense. With the first half now coming to a close, it doesn't look like the Panthers quarterback is having any issues.
Through the air Newton had completed 9 passes for 127 yards, including a touchdown to tight end Greg Olsen. Where he hasn't been able to have success is on the ground, where he has just eleven yards on three carries. This was a point of emphasis entering Sunday's game -- could the Broncos' defense contain an athletic QB like Newton? Something they haven't faced this season.
The primary factor effecting Newton's ability to move the ball through the air has been an inability to find receiver Steve Smith. Held to just one catch in the first half, Smith is the Panthers' only reliable deep threat. Broncos cornerback Champ Bailey has been doing a fantastic job containing Smith, frustrating the veteran receiver.
