Panthers fire special teams coach Brian Murphy

The Carolina Panthers fired second-year special teams coach Brian Murphy on Monday. How was the special teams unit doing this season?

The Carolina Panthers have fired special teams coach Brian Murphy, according to a tweet by Joe Person. Murphy was in his second season coaching the special teams for the Panthers after coaching special teams for the Minnesota Vikings from 2006-10.

So far this season, kicker Justin Medlock has only missed two field goals out of nine attempted. Punter Brad Nortman has averaged 42.4 yards per punt and the net punt average has been 36.7 yards per kick, an average of 9.3 yards per return for opponents. He has also forced 11 fair catches, two touchbacks and 15 punts inside the 20-yard line. The punt protection has allowed one punt block this season.

On kickoff returns, the Panthers are averaging 22.5 yards per return and allowing 15 yards per return. On punt returns while they have allowed one punt return for a touchdown this season, they are averaging only 5.6 yards per return, calling for five fair catches.
