With his right shoulder in a sling, Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger left Heinz Field to have his injury examined further at a hospital.

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger reportedly sustained a right separated shoulder on Monday night against the Chiefs. Jason Cole of Yahoo! sports reported on the news of the separated shoulder, an injury that was characterized as atypical.

Roethlisberger has now left Heinz Field to get an MRI and have the shoulder examined at a hospital. ESPN's Rick Reilly had an exchange with the Steeler QB as he left the stadium with a sling on his right shoulder, and he simply shook his head when asked how bad it was. His agent, Ryan Tollner, later told Reilly that it was a "non-traditional" injury.

Roethlisberger left the field early in the third quarter after he was driven into the turf by two Chiefs defenders. ESPN cameras picked up Roethlisberger being carted through the tunnel at Heinz Field with his shoulder pads off.

Now, with his team leading 13-10 against the Chiefs, the Steelers quarterback is on his way to the hospital with his wife for more comprehensive tests. Tollner also said the injury was "unique" and not something the training staff typically sees.

Byron Leftwich came on for just his second regular-season appearance in the last two years and will try to finish off Kansas City in the final five minutes.
