San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith has officially been ruled out with a concussion against the Chicago Bears on Monday Night Football.
The San Francisco 49ers have officially ruled out quarterback Alex Smith for their Monday Night Football showdown with the Chicago Bears, as posted on the team's official website. The announcement simply says that Smith has been declared out for the game after being evaluated by medical director Dr. Dan Garza.
Smith suffered a concussion in the second quarter of Sunday's game against the St. Louis Rams, but many felt that he was likely to play coming into Monday. Meanwhile, Bears quarterback Jay Cutler was already ruled out of the game with a concussion of his own.
Colin Kaepernick will be the starter for San Francisco. He's touched the ball in six of San Francisco's nine games this season. On Sunday, he completed 11 of 17 passes for 117 yards with no touchdowns. He also rushed the ball eight times for 66 yards. His backup will be Scott Tolzien.
He'll take on fellow backup Jason Campbell. Against the Houston Texans, Campbell completed 11 of 19 passes for 94 yards with no touchdowns, and carried the ball one time for 5 yards.
