The Pittsburgh Steelers plan to sign free agent wide receiver Plaxico Burress.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have decided to sign free agent wide receiver Plaxico Burress, according to a report by ESPN's Adam Schefter on Tuesday afternoon. Burress reportedly flew to Pittsburgh on Monday and planned to meet with the team on Tuesday. According to Schefter, the Steelers decided to sign Burress after watching him participate in a workout.

The Steelers wide receiver corps has been weakened by injury, as Antonio Brown has missed the last two games due to an ankle injury and Jerricho Cotchery sustained an injury late in Sunday's contest against the Baltimore Ravens. This left team exploring for replacement options.

The Steelers originally drafted Burress with the No. 8 overall selection in the 2000 NFL Draft. He went on to play with the team for five seasons, registering 261 receptions for 4,164 yards and 22 touchdowns in 71 games over that span.

After the 2004 season he joined the New York Giants and played for the team for four seasons before being arrested in 2008 for accidentally shooting himself in the leg. After missing two full seasons, he returned to the NFL in 2011 as a member of the New York Jets.
