Aaron Curry announces his release from Raiders on Twitter

Kirby Lee-US PRESSWIRE

The Oakland Raiders confirmed they waived linebacker Aaron Curry, a former fourth overall pick, on Tuesday.

Oakland Raiders linebacker Aaron Curry tweeted that he has been released from the Oakland Raiders on Tuesday, and the team confirmed the news via Twitter.

The fourth-year pro had battled sore knees this season. He missed offseason workouts, all of training camp and only returned for the Raiders' past two games after being activated from the physically unable to perform list.

Curry played 15 snaps against the Baltimore Ravens two weeks ago, according to Oakland beat reporter Steve Corkran, and recorded a single tackle. He played in only three plays during the Raiders' 38-17 loss to the New Orleans Saints this past week.

Oakland acquired Curry last year in a deal with the Seattle Seahawks. The fourth overall pick in the 2009 draft didn't live up to expectations, and he was traded for a 2012 seventh-round pick and a fifth-round pick next year. Corkran reports that Curry's salary will count toward $1.5 million in "dead-money" on the Raiders' salary cap in 2013.

Curry has 203 career tackles and four forced fumbles.
