NFL lifts Ed Reed's suspension; Ravens safety will be fined $50,000

Ed Reed won't be suspended after all.

The NFL announced a one-game suspension for Reed earlier this week for "repeated" violations of the rules protecting players from hits to the head and neck. Reed appealed his case, which usually seems like just a formality, and the NFL actually rescinded his suspension.

Reed will now just be fined $50,000, but will not be suspended for the Ravens' Week 12 game against the Chargers.

Ted Cottrell, the hearing officer in Reed's appeal, wrote in a letter:

"I have determined that your actions were egregious and warrant significant discipline. However, I do not believe that your actions were so egregious as to subject you to a one-game suspension without pay. Player safety is the league's primary concern in the formation of playing rules and all players are expected to adhere to those rules or face disciplinary action. I hope in the future you will focus on ensuring that your play conforms to the rules."

Reed was penalized for hitting Steelers' receiver Emmanuel Sanders last week. Even Steelers safety Ryan Clark didn't agree with Reed's suspension, saying he didn't think Reed was intentionally trying to harm his teammate.

Reed has been disciplined for illegal hits twice in the two years before last Sunday's hit.
