So, it's hard to tell just how definitive Jim Harbaugh is about anything in the 49ers quarterback situation, given his insistence upon trolling the masses while he gives them reason to wonder who will be his starter under center. That said, Colin Kaepernick will start Sunday against the Rams.
And Alex Smith? Yeah, he's done in this town. Sure, Harbaugh says Smith is "[their] guy," but I bet he'd say the same about Randy Moss, and you don't see him starting, do you?
"Bomani & Jones" has peeped game on this. We see the far-reaching consequences of Harbaugh's decision. And we have a dark sense of humor, so we can see the hilarity in Alex Smith working hard as he could for years, finally finding a guy who believed in him ... and still getting parked on the oak.
Cold world, folks. But it makes for good jokes!
Anyway, you wanna know the biggest winner in all of this? The 49ers as a team. Because if you don't think seeing Smith getting parked after playing the best football of his life didn't put a little extra pep in the guys' steps in practice, you're crazy. You think the team doesn't realize no one's job is safe? That no salary is so large that you can't have your job taken by some young guy (plus, they've got to play Smith whether he plays or not)?
Oh yeah, there's plenty of motivation for the Niners players. They now know being good enough isn't good enough. Their coach wants to be the best, and you don't get there by settling. And if you settle, you might wind up benched forever.
