Boosted by two 200-yard-plus performances from running back Doug Martin, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are three-point favorites Sunday afternoon against the San Diego Chargers. At 4-4, Tampa has moved back into the playoff chase thanks to two straight wins.
Tampa's offense has been relentless in its last four games, scoring at least 28 points in those contests. Oddsmakers are expecting another high-scoring affair when the Chargers come to town, with the over/under currently set at 48. That comes despite San Diego's mostly moribund offense, which ranks in the bottom half of the league in just about every offensive category.
But San Diego's hallmark is its defense, which will provide a big challenge for Martin and the Bucs. The Chargers' run defense is fourth best in the NFL, allowing just 84 yards per contest. Whether their defensive line will be up to the task of slowing down Martin — who rumbled for a franchise-best 251 yards against a hapless Oakland defense — will be the key in Sunday's matchup.
Against the spread, the Buccaneers are 6-2, though their home record is a less impressive 2-2. San Diego, just like their regular-season mark, is an even .500 against the spread at 4-4.
