Rex Ryan made the call for Greg McElroy to replace the ineffective Mark Sanchez.
Greg McElroy will get the start at quarterback for the New York Jets in Week 16, according to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News (and later confirmed by the Jets). It will be the first start of McElroy's NFL career as he replaces the ineffective Mark Sanchez.
McElroy hops Tim Tebow for the starting job. Tebow was the high-profile backup quarterback who many have been calling for throughout the season. He is currently playing with broken ribs, and made a brief appearance on Monday night. He had not played in the Jets' previous three games.
With the Jets still in the playoff hunt, Sanchez likely hit a low point in an already ugly season on Monday night. He finished the game 13 of 28 with four interceptions and a 6.8 quarterback rating. The loss to the Titans officially eliminated the Jets from the postseason, and made it almost impossible for Rex Ryan to continue to go with Sanchez over the final two weeks of the season.
McElroy got his first NFL action earlier this month when Sanchez was yanked in the middle of a game against the Cardinals. He was 5 of 7 in the relief appearance, and led the Jets' only scoring drive. New York hosts the San Diego Chargers this Sunday.
