Tim Tebow trade request may come if Jets QB remains benched

USA TODAY Sports

The third-year quarterback has seen limited action in his first season with the Jets and, after Greg McElroy was named starter for next weekend, Tim Tebow might ask out of New York next season.

After a loss on Monday night to the Tennessee Titans, the New York Jets announced that Greg McElroy, not Tim Tebow, would be the one to replace Mark Sanchez at quarterback next weekend against the San Diego Chargers.

Apparently, Tebow didn't take that bit of Tuesday afternoon news well.

The New York Daily News reported on Tuesday that if McElroy is to finish out the season as the Jets' starting quarterback, Tebow will request a trade or a release at the end of this season.

That report somewhat contradicted an earlier report from Tuesday that had Tebow still contemplating the Jets' decision to start McElroy.

Despite being acquired by the Jets in the offseason as a backup quarterback, Tebow has seen little action behind center for New York, attempting just eight passes in the 11 games in which he's appeared. Tebow also has 102 yards rushing on 32 rushing attempts.
