A routine play led to Kansas City being without their No. 1 cornerback.

Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Brandon Flowers left Sunday's game against the Carolina Panthers with an apparent hamstring injury. His return is questionable.

A second-down throw from Cam Newton to wide receiver Joe Adams was a routine play, but following Flowers' tackle the Chiefs CB was down on the field for a few minutes before leaving under his own power. He remained on the Chiefs' bench for Carolina's next offensive series.

The Carolina Panthers were quick to target replacement Nieko Thorpe, as Steve Smith lost the defensive back on the very next play for a 23-yard touchdown catch from Cam Newton. Up to that point Flowers was doing an excellent job covering Smith, and without him on the field Kansas City lack a reliable option to stop the Panthers' deep threat.

Cam Newton is having a successful day against the Chiefs so far, and this injury won't help their ability to stop Carolina's big-play offense. Tight end Greg Olsen has a 47-yard score, and after Smith's 23-yard touchdown it appears the Panthers offense is looking to target any area of weakness.
