Two teams are fighting for respectability as Carson Palmer and the Raiders meet Cam Newton and the Panthers.
The 2012 season was supposed to bring hope and promise to the Oakland Raiders and Carolina Panthers, but both teams playing worse than expected resulted in 4-10 and 5-9 records, respectively. Looking to close out the season and gain respectability, the Raiders come to Carolina looking to ground a Panthers team gaining traction.
Oakland's defense has struggled, but Carson Palmer has been what the Raiders were hoping for when they spent a considerable cost to bring him over from Cincinnati. Throwing for nearly 4,000 yards, Palmer is utilizing a wide array of receivers. However, the Raiders' inability to score paints a picture of the issues with their running backs, and a zone blocking scheme who hasn't been doing Darren McFadden any favors.
The Carolina Panthers could not be happier with their quarterback position over the last few weeks. Since week 11, Cam Newton has the highest quarterback rating in the NFL. He has led the Panthers to three wins in their last four games, and had totaled 13 touchdowns and two interceptions. Scaling back the Panthers' offense has paid huge dividends, and Newton has returned to the form that won him the offensive rookie of the year in 2011.
