Texans leave Adrian Peterson with long odds for rushing record

Brett Davis-USA TODAY Sports

Adrian Peterson is still in the hunt, but it's a lot more unlikely he'll set the rushing record.

Adrian Peterson's road to Eric Dickerson's rushing record took a hit on Sunday as the Minnesota Vikings' running back failed to reach 100 yards for only the sixth time this season. Finishing with 86 yards, Peterson now needs 208 yards to to break the record he has been aiming for.

The Minnesota Vikings were willing to feed Peterson the football, but even with 25 carries he was unable to make a big impact against a stifling Houston Texans' defense. Minnesota walked away with a 23-6 victory, but it now looks very improbable that he will find a way to get the 208 yards he needs.

Next week the Vikings head to home to face the Green Bay Packers in Minneapolis. The Packers have the NFL's 14th ranked run defense, but in their first divisional game of the season Adrian Peterson had one of his best games of the season -- a 210 yard rushing performance that lead to his recent streak. Peterson would need a huge game in Week 17 to break Eric Dickerson's mark.
