Jets likely to fire offensive coordinator Tony Sparano, according to report

Howard Smith-US PRESSWIRE

After a turbulent season, the New York Jets will likely fire offensive coordinator Tony Sparano.

It's been a rough season for the New York Jets' offense and the continued struggles are likely to result in the firing of offensive coordinator Tony Sparano, according to a report from Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports.

The Jets have struggled in Sparano's first season as offensive coordinator. New York is 30th in the NFL in offensive yards per game and have dropped from 13th in points per game in 2011 to 28th this season. While the Jets have run for slightly more yards per game this season, the passing game has taken a step back under Sparano. Mark Sanchez has struggled all season and the Jets are averaging just 179.5 passing yards per game. That is a significant decline from the 206.1 New York averaged last season.

Sparano was brought to New York in part for his ability to incorporate the Wildcat offense, but the specialty package has failed to amount to much this season. Instead, the Jets' offense has sputtered which has led to quarterback controversy and the eventual benching of Sanchez.

If Sparano is indeed fired, he would be the third offensive coordinator to lose his job this year. Tennessee's Chris Palmer and Baltimore's Cam Cameron were let go during the season.
