Sean Payton, Saints agree to new contract, according to report

Sean Payton and the Saints reportedly have come to terms on a contract extension that will keep the head coach in New Orleans for years to come.

The New Orleans Saints and Sean Payton agreed to a multi-year contract extension Friday, according to FOX Sports' Jay Glazer. ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that the deal is for five years, though financial details remain unknown.

Payton is serving a season-long suspension for his alleged role in the Saints' bounty scandal, and that suspension runs through the 2013 Super Bowl. In addition to suspending Payton, the NFL also voided a contract extension that would have kept him in New Orleans through 2015. But now it appears the Saints and Payton have agreed to a new extension that will end the uncertainty over the franchise's head coaching situation heading into the 2013 season.

Payton is 62-34 over six seasons as New Orleans' head coach, and he led the Saints to a win in Super Bowl XLIV. New Orleans won at least 11 games in each season from 2009 to 2011. The Saints are 7-8 this season under interim head coach Joe Vitt.
