Arizona is playing for pride in the final game of the season. San Francisco is playing for a division title after getting spanked by their closest competition the previous week.
Sunday's game between the Arizona Cardinals and San Francisco 49ers mean very different things for two very different teams.
In the first four games of the season, Arizona was an outstanding 4-0. Then everything fell apart, as a string of nine straight losses erased any playoff hopes. Now the Cardinals are playing for pride and jobs next year. As far as jobs go, the biggest question mark is on coach Ken Whisenhunt's future. The Cards were plagued by injuries, resulting in a carousel of players on the offensive line and most importantly at quarterback. If the coach and his battered battalion can pull off an upset of their division rivals, it might -- might -- earn him another season in Glendale.
San Francisco is in a far different position than Arizona. The 49ers are sitting on top of their division and are hoping their one tie won't come back to haunt them. Seattle is lurking behind SF in the standings, carrying one extra loss and no ties and the Seahawks beat the gold out of the 49ers the previous Sunday. Regardless of the outcome, San Francisco has clinched a playoff spot. It's just a matter of when they'll start the playoffs now.
