Jacksonville lets go of Gene Smith, a long-time Jaguars employee and four-year general manager.
The 10 Jacksonville Jaguars staff members who have been with the team since its inception in 1994 is now down to nine after it was reported Monday that the Jaguars have fired general manager Gene Smith.
Smith, who first joined the organization as a collegiate scout in 1994, was let go just a day after the end of a down season in Jacksonville.
Smith's firing is likely part of a large-scale change of direction for the Jaguars after they finished a franchise-worst 2-win season in 2012. Under first-year owner Shahid Khan, the Jaguars had hoped that 2012 would be a step in the right direction after a 5-11 2011 season, but the team instead recorded fewer victories under first-year head coach Mike Mularkey.
The Jaguars squad put together by Smith in his fourth year as general manager finished the season having beaten only the playoff-bound Indianapolis Colts and Tennessee Titans.
