Patriots guard Logan Mankins had surgery after the season to repair a torn ACL, according to a report.

Here's something we didn't expect to hear: Logan Mankins had surgery to repair a torn ACL in the weeks following the 2012 Super Bowl, according to a report from Mike Reiss of ESPNBoston.com. Mankins started 15 of 16 games last season and his injury wasn't known until now.

Mankins missed the team's regular season finale and, according to the report, took a hit in the Super Bowl after which it was discovered that he had a torn ACL.

The surgery has altered the course of Mankins' offseason, making it highly unlikely that he will participate in spring minicamps. While Mankins hopes to be ready for the start of training camp in late July, his status is a consideration as coach Bill Belichick builds the team's roster this offseason.

One of the potential safety nets for Mankins is the addition of Robert Gallery in free agency. He has experience at guard so I wouldn't be surprised if Mankins' injury was a consideration with that move.

Training camp will start in late July, at which point we'll have a better idea of where Mankins stands.
