The Atlanta Falcons announced they've completed a trade to send an undisclosed pick to the Philadelphia Eagles for cornerback Asante Samuel. It was reported earlier in the day that Samuel has agreed on a three-year, $22 million restructuring of his deal.
While we don't know the pick just yet, his last reported price tag was either a fifth or a sixth rounder, based on what the Denver Broncos were believed to be offering. The Eagles have been looking to ship Samuel for a while now, as he commands a high salary and doesn't fit their particular scheme.
In Atlanta, he'll mesh somehow with established starter Brent Grimes and bookend Dunta Robinson. In a statement, coach Mike Smith welcomed Samuel to Atlanta.
"We just improved our team today," Falcons head coach Mike Smith said. "Asante Samuel is a good football player and you can never have enough good players on your team. Our game has become more of a passing game, and you have to have the players who can neutralize how offenses are trying to attack you."

The Atlanta Falcons and Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Asante Samuel have reportedly agreed to a new deal that would make it possible for a trade to go through, according to Albert Breer. The two teams have reportedly been working on a trade for two days now, and Samuel's involvement signals that it's probably just about to go through.
Per a league source, Atlanta has agreed to terms on a 3-year, $18.5M deal for Asante Samuel. So trade will likely go through soon.

The Eagles have had Samuel on the block for about a month now. The Denver Broncos had interest, reportedly considering dealing a pick from round five or six. It would make sense if the price tag is about the same for the Falcons.
Samuel is a multiple-time Pro Bowler for the Eagles and Patriots. He's made the playoffs in almost every year of his NFL career, which could provide the kind of veteran leadership the Falcons have said they're looking for.

Pro Bowl Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Asante Samuel will be traded at some point soon to the Atlanta Falcons, likely for a later draft pick, according to multiple reports. The news has been bubbling since earlier in the week, but at one point had looked to some like a ploy to get fellow corner Brent Grimes to sign his franchise tag. Apparently not.
The Falcons are on the verge of acquiring Eagles Pro-Bowl cornerback Asante Samuel for a late-round pick.

Samuel's new deal would not add additional years to his contract but will alter his remaining salaries. He's excited for deal to be done

Samuel was part of a star trio in Philly, with Nnamdi Asomugha and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, so his inclusion into a Falcons secondary that already features two starting corners in Grimes and Dunta Robinson might not be that much of a disruption. A three-time All-Pro during his time with the Patriots and Eagles, Samuel could provide the type of playoff experience the Falcons entered the offseason declaring they were looking for.

The Atlanta Falcons have announced cornerback Brent Grimes has signed his franchise tender, and not a moment too soon. Earlier in the day, word leaked to Adam Schefter that Atlanta was in the market for Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Asante Samuel. Whether they actually were or were only looking to apply some pressure to Grimes remains to be seen.
Grimes had planned to skip voluntary workouts while hoping for a long-term deal, but it appears both sides have worked it out. His signing continues Atlanta's apparent plan to make minor adjustments in personnel while focusing on scheme overhauls as they try to make it past the first round of the playoffs.
Since going undrafted out of Shippensburg in 2006, Grimes has made a Pro Bowl and emerged as one of the Falcons' best players. He forms a strong tandem with safety William Moore that may be the answer for half of Atlanta's secondary for quite a while.

Asante Samuel's name is being floated around as a potential trade chip and the Eagles should receive offers if that's the case, especially if he's willing to restructure his contract.
