Ravens Roster Cuts: Terrell Suggs Lands On PUP List

Terrell Suggs won't take up a roster spot for Baltimore, as the Ravens have moved him and wide receiver David Reed to the physically unable to perform list with the team needing to trim its roster to 75 by Monday's 4 p.m. deadline. This means Suggs will be inactive for at least the first six weeks of the season.

Along with nine cuts made Sunday afternoon, the Ravens still needed to trim six spots, which they did by adding four players to the injured reserve list -- meaning they can't play in 2012 -- and Suggs and Reed to the PUP list.

Suggs is out indefinitely with a partially torn Achilles tendon, but hopes to return to the team sometime this year, although the timetable for that return is unclear. The linebacker and five-time Pro Bowler hasn't participated in any part of training camp, leaving one of the league's premier defensive units without one of its key players. If and when he is removed from the list, Baltimore will have to cut another player.

Terrell Suggs Injury: Ravens LB Out Of Protective Boot

Terrell Suggs is reportedly out of a walking boot and progressing well from the torn ACL he suffered in May. The Baltimore Ravens outside linebacker still maintains that he will return this season. He says he suffered only a partial tear, and that he's enjoying the rehab process.

"It's going great, I'm in good spirits, I like the progress that I'm making," Suggs said. "I came out of the boot last week, I'm just walking right now, doing muscle strengthening, trying to get the tendon back strong, and I'm great with where I'm at right now, just loving the process."

Suggs also said that there was still no timetable for his return. He won NFL Defensive Player of the Year last season after recording 70 total tackles and a career high 14 sacks. The Ravens will turn to Paul Kruger and rookie Courtney Upshaw out of Alabama to make up for the absence of Suggs' pass-rushing skills.

Terrell Suggs Keeps Saying He'll Be Back This Year

It's been more than a month since Terrell Suggs tore his Achilles' tendon which puts his 2012 season in doubt. But the Baltimore Ravens star linebacker continues to say that he will return to the field at some point in the 2012 season. A little optimistic for an injury that usually includes a recovery time of 9-12 months.

On Thursday, Suggs once again proclaimed he would be back in uniform this year.

"I will be in a Baltimore Ravens uniform in 2012. The only question is when."

The Ravens reportedly aren't counting on him to play. He suffered the injury at the end of April and the Ravens season starts in September. We'll see what the Ravens think about his status for the 2012 season when they need his roster spot. If they continue to hold an open spot for him on the active roster come the regular season, then we'll know they believe he has a legitimate shot at returning.

Ravens Won't Pursue Terrell Suggs' Contract After Injury

The Baltimore Ravens confirmed they will not go after Terrell Suggs' money after the linebacker suffered an Achilles' injury during a game of basketball this offseason. Team owner Steve Bisciotti conducted a press conference where he was announcing a naming rights deal with Under Armour for their facility and confirmed to reporters that they will not pursue action against Suggs.

Via Carroll County Times:

"He got criticized for being out of shape a couple of years ago and he said it would never happen again. He made the Pro Bowl last year and then he made Defensive Player of the Year this Year. I want these guys striving. It gets pretty boring in the weight room. He wasn't kite boarding. I'd like to see that one day. If he's playing basketball, that's great."

Suggs says the injury came during a conditioning test. Technically the Ravens could have pursued a portion of his contract if he suffered a non-football injury, but Bisciotti confirmed that they wont. His level-headed response makes sense considering a number of other Ravens players play basketball in the offseason, sometimes even for charity.

So Suggs' money is safe but his Achillies is not. He's rehabbing and hoping to return to the field by November, which is awfully optimistic.

Terrell Suggs' Injury Came During Basketball Game, Witnesses Say

There's a new report out from ESPN indicating that the injury suffered by Baltimore Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs -- an Achilles tendon injury -- came during a game of basketball. Suggs quickly denied that was the case and said his injury came during a conditioning test.

And now ESPN has circled back around on the report that the injury came during a basketball game. Adam Schefter has a number of sources who report seeing Suggs go down during a basketball game on the weekend of the NFL Draft in April.

While the report sure makes it seem like Suggs isn't telling the truth, the reality is that it likely doesn't matter. Whether Suggs hurt his Achilles playing basketball or in a conditioning test, it came away from the facility -- a "non-football injury" -- which means the Ravens have the right to go after a portion of Suggs' contract.

But the Ravens haven't gone after his money and, after waiting this long, appear as if they won't.

So Suggs may not be telling the truth about how he suffered his injury, but it probably doesn't matter anyway.

Terrell Suggs Injury: Ravens Hopeful Linebacker Can Return Late In The Season

The Baltimore Ravens are hopeful that they can get last year's Defensive Player of the Year Terrell Suggs back before the end of the season. According to a Thursday report from Don Banks at SI.com, the Ravens believe that they could have the linebacker back in the lineup late in the season, playing a smaller role as a pass rushing specialist.

Baltimore's assessment differs slightly from Suggs' own evaluation. Suggs believes that he can return sometime in the middle of the season, October even, at full speed and back in his usual role. Recovery time for an Achilles tear such as the one suffered by Suggs is pegged at anywhere from 4-6 months.

The Ravens could use the new injured reserve exception approved by owners earlier this month. The rule change allows teams to bring back one designated player on the injured reserve list before the end of the season. Prior to the change, players on IR were out for the year, whether they could return later or not.

Terrell Suggs Injury: Partial Tear Of Achilles; 4-6 Month Recovery

The Baltimore Ravens announced on Tuesday night that Terrell Suggs went through successful surgery to repair an injury to his Achilles' tendon, which was suffered on the weekend of the 2012 NFL Draft. What they didn't announce is whether Suggs had a complete or partial tear of his Achilles.

Suggs tells the Baltimore Sun that it was only a partial tear, which makes his return to the field in 2012 more realistic.

"Everything went good, he was in and out," Suggs told The Sun's Mike Preston of the surgery, which was performed in Charlotte, N.C. by noted foot/ankle specialist Dr. Robert Anderson. "There is only a small incision, and he said it was not as bad as some thought it was, which I had already been told."

Suggs continues to target 4-6 months for his recovery time. That would likely place his return sometime in the middle of the season, possibly around October or sooner, if all goes well.

This is much better than the previous thinking that Suggs had a complete tear, which would have likely kept him out the entire season. Suggs can now have a shot at starting the season on the PUP list, which would keep him out of the first six games of the season.

Terrell Suggs Injury: Ravens LB Has Successful Achilles Surgery

Terrell Suggs underwent successful surgery on his torn Achilles tendon, the Baltimore Ravens announced Tuesday:

"Terrell [Suggs] had a successful surgical procedure done on his Achilles tendon this afternoon by Dr. Bob Anderson in Charlotte, [N.C.]," Ravens General Manager Ozzie Newsome said. "After some recovery time, ‘Sizzle' will begin the process of rehabbing the area. We know he will work hard to get back on the field with his teammates as soon as the doctors and trainers allow. We're confident that he can make a full recovery."

The Ravens didn't reveal whether Suggs suffered a full or partial tear of his Achilles tendon, nor did they release an official timetable for his recovery. The linebacker previously predicted he'd be back on the field by early November.

Suggs, the NFL's reigning Defensive Player of the Year, is coming off a career season, recording 14 sacks, 70 tackles and seven forced fumbles. He injured himself the weekend of the NFL Draft during a conditioning workout.

Terrell Suggs Injury: Ravens LB Hurt Achilles In Conditioning Test

Baltimore Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs clarified on Wednesday morning how he suffered a torn Achilles tendon. Suggs told Aaron Wilson of the Carroll County Times and Fox Sports that he was practicing for the Ravens' conditioning test.

Suggs maintained his optimistic time table for returning to the field. He told Wilson in the same conversation that he hoped to be back by the "middle to end" of October or early November at the latest. That will depend entirely on the severity of the injury and his rehabilitation schedule.

The league's incumbent defensive player of the year fired back at suggestions that he could miss the entire season.

Terrell Suggs' Injury Happened On NFL Draft Weekend

Baltimore Ravens linebacker/defensive end Terrell Suggs injured his achilles, either playing basketball or training for the upcoming season doing some conditioning, but the injury occurred during NFL Draft weekend.

The hope is that Suggs does not have a full tear, and it's just a partial tear, which would allow him to play part of the 2012 NFL season. It's interesting, though, that Suggs' injury occurred after the Ravens drafted Alabama linebacker/defensive end Courtney Upshaw, who plays a similar position.

Missing Suggs will hurt the Ravens defense, but thankfully the Ravens were able to snap up a guy who plays the same position in the second round of the NFL Draft. Upshaw was expected to provide some defensive help early on, but now it's possible that he will need to start.

Terrell Suggs Injury: Ravens LB Reportedly Thinks October Return Is Possible

The Baltimore Ravens received some unfortunate news on Thursday when it was reported that LB Terrell Suggs tore his Achilles' tendon, which could cost him the entire 2012 season. The Ravens are saying they're not sure yet whether it's a partial tear or a complete tear, and that Suggs will see a specialist next week.

ESPN's Adam Schefter initially reported the injury came during a game of basketball, but now says it could also have come during a conditioning test.

Suggs, according to Schefter, believes he can come back by October. That would put his recovery time around six months or so. Most Achilles' injuries take nine to 12 months to recover from, so October would be an optimistic outlook on the recovery time.

Either way, Suggs seems likely to start the season on the PUP list, if he plays at all in the 2012 season.
