Ronnie Brown has signed a one-year contract with the San Diego Chargers, the team announced Friday. He will likely serve a backup role behind Ryan Mathews.

Former Miami Dolphins and Philadelphia Eagles running back Ronnie Brown has signed a one-year contract with the San Diego Chargers, the team announced Friday. Brown was active for all 16 games during the regular season in 2011, but recorded just 42 carries for 146 yards and a touchdown.

Brown has struggled since landing on injured reserve in 2009 with a foot injury. He averaged just 3.7 yards per carry in his final year with the Dolphins, and 3.2 yards per carry for the Eagles last season. In San Diego, Brown will likely be asked to serve a backup role behind the occasionally injury-prone Ryan Mathews.

Brown has 4,951 career yards rushing for 37 touchdowns since being selected No. 2 overall by the Dolphins in the 2005 NFL Draft.
