The New England Patriots will start training camp without incumbent left guard Logan Mankins. The four-time Pro Bowler will start camp on the physically unable to perform list, as expected. A Wednesday report from the Boston Herald left his status for the start of the regular season up in the air.
New England has one of the deeper groups of offensive linemen in the NFL. The Herald report notes that center Dan Connolly could slide over and fill the left guard spot without Mankins in action. Connolly and Dan Koppen are vying for the starting center job in camp this season.
The Patriots also brought in free agent Robert Gallery this spring. Gallery has starting experience on the inside as well.
Mankins is recovering from surgery to repair a torn ACL, an injury he played through during the Super Bowl.
