Kyle Boller Retires After Signing With Chargers

On Friday afternoon, Kyle Boller had signed with the San Diego Chargers as Charlie Whitehurst's injury replacement. On Saturday evening, Boller didn't show up at Chargers training camp ... because he retired.

That's the North County Times' Scott Bair breaking the news that the quarterback the Chargers brought in to take snaps in preseason games while Whitehurst nursed a knee injury has decided instead to retire from football.

Boller made a start for the Oakland Raiders in 2011, but had only thrown 32 passes with the Raiders since 2010, none for touchdowns and four for interceptions.

Boller will likely be best remembered as a first round pick and erstwhile savior of the Baltimore Ravens, but he started 16 games for the Ravens just once, in 2004, when he threw for 2,558 yards and 13 touchdowns en route to a 9-7 record. Boller stayed in Baltimore until 2007, then missed a year, then played one season for the Rams in 2009 before heading to Oakland.
