Bad news got worse on Monday morning as O.J. Murdock, a 25-year-old wide receiver for the Tennessee Titans, has been confirmed dead by Tampa Bay Police. Earlier reports indicated that the former Tampa Bay high school star was taken to the hospital with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
According to a media alert sent out by the Tampa Police Department on Monday morning, Murdock, who signed a free agent deal with the Tennessee Titans a year ago, was transported to Tampa General Hospital in critical condition. His body was found in his car in front of Middleton High School around 8:30 a.m. An updated release said he had died at 10:43 a.m.
Murdock, who began his college career with the South Carolina Gamecocks but eventually ended his collegiate career at Fort Hays State, went undrafted in the 2011 NFL Draft. Shorty after the draft Murdock signed with the Titans as an undrafted free agent, but he missed his entire rookie season due to an Achilles injury he suffered during training camp.
Murdock was listed on the "Reserve / Did Not Report" portion of the Titans roster. No other details have been released regarding this tragedy.
