Jahvid Best Likely To Start Season On PUP List

Stay connected with SB Nation

As he continues to recover from a major concussion suffered last season, Detroit Lions running back Jahvid Best isn't expected to be a part of the team's offense early in the season. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Best will likely be placed on the physically unable to perform list soon, which would force him to miss the first six games of the season.

Lions coach Jim Schwartz said recently that Best isn't close to returning to the field, and now it appears that he won't be eligible to return to game action again until Week 7. The 2010 first-round pick only appeared in six games last season before being lost to a head injury, but he's already compiled 1,719 total yards over 22 games in his two-year NFL career.

For now, Kevin Smith becomes the top running back on Detroit's depth chart, although the team should get 2011 second-round pick Mikel Leshoure back sometime before Best's return. Leshoure is currently dealing with a hamstring injury, but he's sure to miss the first two games of the season with a drug-related suspension from the league.
