One week after fracturing his clavicle on his first carry in the San Diego Chargers' first preseason game, Ryan Mathews has said there is 'no doubt' that he'll be ready to start in Week 1 of the regular season against the Raiders on Sept. 10.
Mathews was expected to miss four-to-six weeks with that injury, which could have held him out one or two weeks of the regular season, but he told XTRA Sports 1360 that he is out of his sling and healing ahead of schedule. It remains to be seen if Mathews is just being optimistic, or if team doctors agree with his prognosis.
The Chargers will need to rely heavily on the Mathews this season with the loss of RB Mike Tolbert, but Mathews has always had injury problems dating back to college. Ronnie Brown takes Tolbert's place as Mathews backup this year.
