Former NFL running back Jamal Lewis was arrested Wednesday and charged with child abandonment.
Retired NFL running back Jamal Lewis was arrested Wednesday for allegedly not paying child support, according to a report from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Lewis was charged with child abandonment and jailed briefly in the Clayton County jail. The arrest warrant also states Lewis has not had contact with his son for more than a year. The child abandonment charge is a misdemeanor.
Lewis, who rushed for 10,607 yards during his 10-year NFL career, filed for bankruptcy in April, claiming $10.6 million in debts. He retired from the NFL in 2009 after a successful career. He rushed for 2,066 yards in 2003, the second-highest single-season total in NFL history.
Lewis played seven of his 10 NFL seasons for the Baltimore Ravens, although he missed the 2001 season due to injury. He finished his career with the Cleveland Browns posting two seasons with more than 1,000 yards before playing in just nine games during his final season in 2009.
