St. Louis Rams give former No. 6 pick Vernon Gholston another chance to make it in the NFL.

The St. Louis Rams signed former first-round pick Vernon Gholston on Wednesday to add depth at defensive end, a position where only four players suited up at the team's last practice.

In 45 games since being drafted sixth overall by the New York Jets in 2008, Gholston has yet to record an NFL sack. Gholston was in the Chicago Bears' camp last year and worked out for the Houston Texans and Detroit Lions, each of which passed on signing him.

Rams blog Turf Show Times asks why the team would sign a player who contributed nothing to his former team.

The Rams play the Dallas Cowboys for their third preseason game Saturday night in Dallas.
