The Browns officially named Brandon Weeden the team's starting quarterback.
The Cleveland Browns went ahead and made official what many of us figured would eventually happen and named Brandon Weeden the team's starting quarterback. Weeden was the Browns 1st round pick in the 2012 NFL Draft so you knew it was only a matter of time until he was named the starter.
That the Browns named him the starter this early is a slight surprise. I expected the team to keep the competition going throughout training camp but to many it was Weeden's job all along. Naming him the starter right now may be a move designed at giving him some confidence heading into Friday night's preseason opener against the Detroit Lions.
Seneca Wallace and Colt McCoy will back him up but not necessarily in that order as the No. 2 quarterback competition continues. For now, though, McCoy is the No. 2 quarterback.
The big story with Weeden is his age -- 28 years old. He played baseball before continuing his career at Oklahoma State and landing in the NFL with the Browns.
As for McCoy, who was the starter in Cleveland last year, Nate Ulbrich reports:

#Browns QB McCoy said he learned Weeden was named starter right before practice. Asked if he wants trade, he said "we'll see what happens"
