Cleveland Browns running back Trent Richardson returned to practice on Monday for the first time since early August. Richardson's status for the team's opening week game against the Philadelphia Eagles is still up in the air, but this may put him on track to take the field. Richardson, the team's first-round pick in the 2012 draft, underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee on Aug. 9.
If Richardson is unable to go in Week 1, the Browns will likely split carries between backups Montario Hardesty and Brandon Jackson. The team opted to keep a fourth running back -- Chris Ogbonnaya -- on its initial 53-man roster as insurance in case Richardson's recovery takes longer than the team hopes.
As a junior at Alabama last season, Richardson ran for 1,679 yards and 21 touchdowns.

Trent Richardson is targeting a return for the first week of the NFL's regular season. The rookie running back underwent arthroscopic knee surgery early in training camp for a bothersome left knee that was originally projected to keep him out of the Cleveland Browns' regular season debut.
Richardson isn't guaranteed to return for the first week of the regular season, of course, but team president Mike Holmgren said Wednesday that that's the target they're currently shooting for with his return.
"If it goes according to schedule and there are no setbacks, there's a chance he could be ready to play in the first game," Holmgren said. "As a coaching staff and as an organization you have to be really smart in how you do that. As much as we'd all love to see him play, and are looking forward to him playing, we can't rush him back in before he's ready."
The sooner the better when it comes to Richardson, obviously, as he's expected to begin his career as one of his team's top offensive options.

Cleveland Browns running back Trent Richardson is expected to be back at practice "soon," according to head coach Pat Shurmur. Richardson has been out since getting his knee scoped in early August, but Shurmur sounded optimistic about Richardson's status in a press conference Monday morning:
"He's getting better every day so his progress has been outstanding. I think he's ten days out now, so he's about where we thought he'd be at this point, probably a little bit ahead of that. He'll be out here soon."

The Browns traded up in the 2012 draft to pick Richardson third overall. He is expected to be a major part of a revamped Cleveland offense that includes fellow 2012 first round pick Brandon Weeden, but it remains to be seen if Richardson's health will hold him back this season.

When Cleveland Browns rookie running back Trent Richardson was first revealed to be getting arthroscopic surgery on his left knee, the feeling was that he'd be good-to-go right around the time the regular season came around. After having successful surgery, the Browns noted that they are hopeful he'd be able to return by Week 1 against the Philadelphia Eagles.
On Monday, Nate Ulrich of the Akron Beacon Journal posted an update on Richardson. He's been spending all his time at the Browns' headquarters since the successful surgery. Head coach Pat Shurmur had a quote, in which he reiterates that the team is "hopeful" that Richardson will return by the start of the regular season:
"Trent's here and he's getting better," Shurmur said. "When he's ready, he'll be out. But he's here. He's here all day long doing his thing trying to get healthy."
Shurmur is hopeful Richardson can return by the start of the regular season. But Shurmur said he had no further update on a timetable for when Richardson is expected to be back.
Richardson is expected to be a large part of Cleveland's offense in 2012. Last season, Cleveland came out of the gate with a surprisingly strong defense and were contending in the division for a time, before their weak offense started to drag behind. Richardson is likely to shoulder the entire offense on his back, alongside quarterback Brandon Weeden, also a rookie first-round pick.
The surgery was to remove a cartilage fragment that could have led to injury in the future. Like most arthroscopic surgeries, it was a simple affair with a low recovery time. Barring any setbacks or information we don't know about, there's a solid chance that the Browns will hit their target date and Richardson can debut in the regular season against the Eagles the first week.

Cleveland Browns rookie running back Trent Richardson had successful arthroscopic surgery on his left knee on Thursday and the organization is hopeful that he will be ready for the start of the regular season.
Richardson experienced discomfort at Browns' training camp this week, sitting out practice and riding a stationary bike on Tuesday. On Wednesday, the team announced he would travel to Florida to have a "routine" operation performed by the renowned Dr. James Andrews. Richardson, who had a torn meniscus repaired by Andrews in February, had a loose piece of cartilage removed in this latest procedure.
According to head coach Pat Shurmur, everything went well, via Mary Kay Cabot of The Plain Dealer:
"Trent Richardson underwent a successful routine arthroscopic procedure today on his left knee,'' coach Pat Shurmur said in a statement. "It was performed by Dr. James Andrews in Pensacola, Fla.
"We anticipate that Trent will make a speedy recovery, and we are hopeful that he will be ready for our Week One game against Philadelphia."
The Browns are expecting the halfback they selected with the No. 3 overall pick in April's 2012 NFL draft to shoulder much of the load on the offensive side of the ball. Richardson will almost certainly be tabbed as a workhorse back in the rigorous AFC North, taking pressure off fellow rookie Brandon Weeden and the passing game. But with his preseason now almost certainly lost, Richardson will have some catching up to do in the first month of the season.

The Cleveland Browns will be without running back Trent Richardson for a while. Richardson will be undergoing arthroscopic surgery on Thursday for a bothersome left knee, according to Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain-Dealer. It looks like he'll be missing the Browns preseason opener, and likely more preseason games.
ESPN reported that Richardson is expected to be ready for the season opener, if not sooner.
Richardson missed Tuesday's practice with the team and did not speak to the media regarding the reasons why but he was spotted with a sleeve on his leg. He left Cleveland on Wednesday to visit Dr. James Andrews, who operated on his knee in February.
The surgery is to remove a "tiny piece of cartilage", according to the report. A report on Wednesday said the surgery is "not a big deal" but a pair of surgeries before he plays in his first NFL game will raise some eyebrows. The Browns used the third overall pick on Richardson last April.

Cleveland Browns running back Trent Richardson is visiting the legendary Dr. James Andrews on Thursday. Richadson's visit could also include surgery on his knee, according to Chris Mortensen from ESPN.
Trent Richardson's visit to Dr. Andrews includes tentatively scheduled arthroscopic surgery to clean up loose particle of cartilage

This is the second procedure in six months that Richardson will undergo on his knee. In February, he had surgery to repair a torn meniscus that kept him out of pre-draft workouts. He had been practicing with the Browns in training camp. Knee troubles flared up again this week, and he was out of practice on Tuesday.
Knee scopes are a relatively minor procedure, but surgery nonetheless. A timeline for Richardon's return has not been established, and probably will not be until he meets with Dr. Andrews and confirms whether or not he needs surgery.

Few NFL teams want to hear their player is visiting the famed Dr. James Andrews because it means something is wrong. That's the position the Cleveland Browns find themselves in on Wednesday as running back Trent Richardson is scheduled to visit Dr. Andrews for a bothersome knee.
Richardson missed Tuesday's practice and was spotted with a sleeve on his knee. The Browns aren't giving much information on the injury but a source tells Tony Grossi of ESPN Cleveland that the injury is "not a big deal."
Still, Richardson is making a visit to Dr. Andrews to ensure that nothing is wrong. He had surgery on the same knee back in February for a torn meniscus. It's unclear if that is related to this injury.
As of now, Richardson has not been ruled out of the Browns preseason opener against the Detroit Lions on Friday night, but it's looking less likely he'll be available for that game.

No. 3 overall pick Trent Richardson is preparing for his first pro season with the Cleveland Browns, but he may have hit a bit of a road block as the preseason gets underway. A knee injury may sideline Richardson for the rest of this week, including the preseason opener.
Mary Kay Cabot, the Browns beat reporter from the Cleveland Plain Dealer, reported that Richardson sat out of Tuesday's practice due to a sore left knee. It is possible that Richardson may have to miss the Browns' first preseason game against the Detroit Lions on Friday.
Richardson had a sleeve on his left knee following Tuesday's practice and would not discuss the injury with the media. He had previously had his left knee scoped in February. He will be evaluated by team doctors later on Tuesday.
