Seattle Seahawks Establish 7-Man Practice Squad

The Seattle Seahawks have put together their seven-player practice squad. The names are listed below.

On offense, Josh Portis will be the team's main scout team quarterback. Portis was signed by the Seahawks as an undrafted free agent after the 2011 NFL Draft. Wide receiver Ricardo Lockette was also signed by the Seahawks as an undrafted free agent last year, and had two catches for 105 yards and one touchdown. Jermaine Kearse also went undrafted in 2012 and was signed soon after the draft by the Seahawks.

Along the line, offensive tackle Edawn Coughman was signed by the Seahawks this offseason. He went undrafted in 2011 and played in the CFL with the Toronto Argonauts. Offensive guard Rishaw Johnson went undrafted in 2012 and was picked up by the Seahawks afterwards.

Linebacker Korey Toomer was drafted by the Seahawks in the 5th round with the 154th pick out of Idaho. Safety DeShawn Shead signed with the Seahawks after the draft.

Jets Practice Squad: Jordan White, Antonio Allen Signed

The Jets cut four of their 2012 draft picks in order to make the 53-man roster limit, but two of those will be joining the Jets anyway as members of the team's practice squad.

Seventh-rounders Jordan White and Antonio Allen both cleared waivers, unlike the team's sixth-round pick, Terence Ganaway, a running back out of Baylor who was picked up by the Rams after New York cut him loose. The team opted not to bring back offensive lineman Robert Griffin, who, like Ganaway, was also a sixth-round pick out of Baylor, but did clear waivers.

Here's the full eight-man group:

CB Donnie Fletcher
TE Hayden Smith
OLB Ricky Sapp
T Paul Cornick
LB Marcus Dowtin
WR Royce Pollard
S Antonio Allen
WR Jordan White

Allen was a surprise late cut after a strong preseason. White led the NCAA in receiving as a senior with over 1,900 yards for Western Michigan, and the Australian-born Smith has turned heads as he has tried to turn a professional rugby career into one in football.

Dolphins Name Eight To Practice Squad

The Miami Dolphins have named eight players to their practice squad in preparation for the start of the regular season, The Palm Beach Post's Ben Volin reported late Sunday.

Among those named to the squad was former Oregon linebacker Josh Kaddu and safety Anderson Russell. The full list of practice squad players is as follows:

  • Offensive tackle Chandler Burden
  • Offensive tackle Andrew McDonald
  • Linebacker Jonathan Freeny
  • Linebacker Josh Kaddu
  • Receiver Jeff Fuller
  • Receiver Chris Hogan
  • Cornerback DeAndre Presley
  • Safety Anderson Russell

You might remember Chris Hogan from his star turn as part of the Dolphin's run as the team featured in HBO's Hard Knocks, where he earned the praise of teammates and the nickname "7-11."

Freeny, a distant cousin of the Indianapolis Colts' Dwight Freeny, originally signed with the Dolphins as an undrafted free agent during the 2011 offseason. Presley, a rookie out of Appalachian State, spent the beginning of camp with the San Diego Chargers.

Giants Practice Squad: David Douglas, 7 Others Signed

The New York Giants added eight players to their practice squad on Saturday, according to Ed Valentine of Giants SB Nation blog Big Blue View.

Wide receiver David Douglas, who is an undrafted rookie out of Arizona, heads a list that also includes defensive ends Matt Broha and Craig Marshall, offensive linemen Matt McCants, Selvish Capers and Stephen Goodin, tight end Larry Donnell and defensive back Laron Scott. All eight players were waived by the Giants as part of their final roster cuts on Friday.

Douglas' addition to the practice squad comes as a bit of a surprise, as it appeared he would be claimed by another team after being waived by New York. Douglas caught one ball for 23 yards during the preseason, with the catch coming in the Giants' victory over the New York Jets on Aug. 18.

Steelers Complete Practice Squad

The Steelers practice squad is complete. Pittsburgh picked up two wide receivers, two offensive linemen, two defensive backs, a tight end and linebacker. SB Nation's Steelers blog Behind the Steel Curtain has the list for you here:

G Ryan Lee

WR Toney Clemons

WR David Gilreath

OL John Malecki

TE Jamie McCoy

LB Marshall McFadden

S Damon Cromartie-Smith

CB Josh Victorian

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has the Steelers making at least one more move on Monday when they are expected to place rookie guard David DeCastro on the designated injured reserve list. That move allows DeCastro to return to the roster after eight weeks.

But that's going to leave the Steelers with only eight offensive linemen, so they are expected to add another to that group to replace DeCastro. The Gazette says it could be veteran Trai Essex, who was released on Friday.

Chiefs Practice Squad Includes Few Surprises

The Kansas City Chiefs have named their eight-man practice squad for the 2012 NFL Season.

AFC West Preview

Here is the complete list of players who made it to the squad:

Mims, Newsome and Patterson should be familiar names for Chiefs fans, as they each spent some time with Kansas City's practice squad last season.

Hemingway was the Chiefs' seventh round pick out of Michigan in the 2012 NFL Draft, and he was waived after injuries limited him to two preseason games, where he caught one pass for 14 yards.

Bellamy is an undrafted wideout from Louisville who turned some heads with a strong training camp performance.

DiMarco, Mims and Patterson are each entering their second NFL season, while Thorpe and Long are rookies.

Texans Practice Squad: Case Keenum, 6 Others Signed

The Texans signed seven players to their practice squad, including former Houston Cougars quarterback Case Keenum. The seven-player list, as reported by Mark Berman of FOX 26 and the Houston Chronicle's John McClain, goes as follows:

1. QB Case Keenum
2. RB Johnathan Grimes
3. WR Jeff Maehl
4. TE Phillip Supernaw
5. DT David Hunter
6. OLB Delano Johnson
7. S Eddie Pleasant

Keenum appeared to have the opportunity to win the No.3 quarterback spot on Houston's 53-man roster, but that job went to the more experienced John Beck. The Battle Red Blog expects the Texans to pursue an offensive tackle, but more of a swing tackle, to backup Derek Newton and Duane Brown.

This, from BRB:

I would guess they will go offensive line shopping, as the Texans usually carry an offensive lineman on the practice squad. I would be mildly surprised if they did not add a young, developmental tackle as the final member of the practice squad.

Cowboys Practice Squad: 8 Players Signed, Stephen McGee Released

The Cowboys signed eight players to their practice squad after the final cuts for 53-man rosters and also released No.3 quarterback Stephen McGee to fill a void at tight end with Jason Witten having health issues. Dallas picked up tight end Colin Cochart off waivers

Cochart, considered primarily a blocker more so than the receiving threat Witten is and Martellus Bennett was when he was with the team, started three games for the Bengals last year and played in 10. He caught five passes for 44 yards and one touchdown in 2011.

As noted at Blogging the Boys, none of the Cowboys' Friday cuts were picked up off waivers by other teams, so the practice squad is made up entirely of players the Cowboys had in camp: WR Danny Coale, LB Orie Lemon, RB Lance Dunbar, RB Jamize Olawale, DT Robert Calloway, DE Ben Bass, WR Tim Benford and G Ron Leary.
