Charles Woodson Rips Jay Cutler: 'Same Old Jay'

The Green Bay Packers defense collected four interceptions and seven sacks from Jay Cutler and the Chicago Bears during a 23-10 romp on Thursday night, and Packers safety Charles Woodson couldn't resist taking one extra shot after the game. In a post game interview with ESPN reporter Rachel Nichols, Woodson had this to say about Bears QB Jay Cutler:

"It's the same old Jay. We just need to be in position. Jay will throw us the ball."

There is plenty of truth in Woodson's statement, but it's important to remember that Bears defenders used to say the exact same thing after playing future Hall of Fame quarterback and Green Bay great, Brett Favre. Cutler's elite arm strength can get him into trouble at times, but he still has all the physical tools to dominate the game from the quarterback position.

Even so, Woodson can be forgiven for his slight on Jay, because he has not seen the of best Cutler over the course of his career. As noted by ESPN Stats, Cutler is just 1-7 against the Packers, with eight touchdown passes, 16 interceptions and 28 sacks.

The Bears and Packers will meet again during the regular season in Week 15 at Soldier Field.

Packers Fake Field Goal Was A Thing Of Beauty

The Green Bay Packers beat the Chicago Bears on Thursday Night Football and they did it with the help of some trickery -- a fake field goal.

The Packers led the Bears 3-0 with 1:50 remaining in the first half. They lined up for a 45 yard field goal in the hopes of pushing the lead to 6-0 entering halftime.

More: Full Recap And Highlights Of Bears-Packers

What they got was more than three points. The Packers executed a picture perfect fake field goal which resulted in a touchdown and a two-score lead. With the way the Packers defense was harassing Jay Cutler all night long, this touchdown put the game firmly in the hands of the Packers, who went on to win 23-10.

Here's a snapshot of how the Packers executed the play that broke the game wide open.

Packers1_medium

This is the pre-snap look. The field goal attempt is close enough that the Bears don't have someone deep to return it in case the kick is short. Keep an eye on Tom Crabtree, No. 83, lined up on the far left.

Packers2_medium

The kicker runs to the left, freezing the defense. They likely think the pitch is going to the kicker on the left side of the field. But in reality the ball is going to Crabtree, who is circled here, and running opposite the kicker. Look at the blocks forming on the right side of the line. You can see that's about to open up.

Packers3_medium

The Bears defenders on the left side of the field are looking at the kicker. They're already out of the play. The blocks are forming on the right side of the field. And the holder has executed a perfect pitch to Crabtree. The fake is in and Crabtree has blockers ahead of him.

Packers4_medium

Here you can see the Bears are screwed. There are three Packers blockers for two Bears defenders, which means this thing is over, as long as Crabtree is fast enough to make it to the end zone (Hint: he is).

Packers5_medium

Wide open. He's gone and the holder celebrates.

Now see it in action:

Packfake_medium

Forget the Packers regular offense. They need to run more fake field goals.

Bears Vs. Packers Is NFL Network's Highest Rated Thursday Night Football Game

The television audience for the Thursday night game between the Chicago Bears and the Green Bay Packers was the largest ever to view a Thursday Night Football telecast on the NFL Network, according to Dan Masonson of NFL Communications. The game received a rating of 6.3, breaking the previous record of 6.0 held by the Ravens-49ers match-up on Thanksgiving in 2011.

Fans who tuned in were treated to a defensive show from the Packers' Clay Matthews, who finished the game with 3.5 sacks. The Packers also turned in an exciting 27-yard fake field goal touchdown in the 23-10 victory over the Bears.

The New York Giants and Carolina Panthers will have a shot at the new NFL Network ratings record when they face off in the next edition of Thursday Night Football on Sept. 20 at 8:20 p.m. ET.

Matt Forte's Injury Believed To Be High Ankle Sprain

Chicago Bears star running back Matt Forte left the team's Week 2 game against the Green Bay Packers during the third quarter with an ankle injury, and it is now believed that Forte suffered a high ankle sprain, according to a report from Adam Schefter of ESPN. Forte was injured during the team's first series in the third quarter when Charles Woodson rolled up on his ankle after a 14-yard reception. He left the game after compiling 31 rushing yards on seven attempts and 45 yards receiving on four catches. He did not return to the game.

The Bears signed Forte to a four-year deal during the offseason with $18 million in guaranteed money, but they also had the foresight to add former Raiders running back Michael Bush, who will now have to carry the load for the Bears' rushing attack until Forte's ankle heals.

Bears Vs. Packers, Week 2: Acme Packing Company Reacts To Win

The Green Bay Packers erased the memory of their Week 1 loss to the San Francisco 49ers by disposing of the division rival Chicago Bears 23-10 on Thursday night.

Acme Packing Company was quick to give the Packers their due in recovering so quickly from such a disappointing start to the season. The Packers got back to the basics of trying to establish the run and causing havoc on defense. As APC points out, Cedric Benson carried the ball 20 times for 81 yards to provide some semblance of offensive balance, something that was lacking against the Niners.

The defense also came to play and made Bears' quarterback Jay Cutler spend much of the evening on his back. Clay Matthews' 3.5 sacks were the highlight on that end as defensive coordinator Dom Capers decided that blitzing was going to be a constant throughout the game from the very first play.

Bears Vs. Packers, Week 2: A Night To Forget For Chicago

A horrid performance from the Chicago Bears offense at Green Bay Thursday night led to the Bears' demise in a 23-10 loss. Quarterback Jay Cutler threw four interceptions and was sacked seven times. Wide receiver Brandon Marshall dropped a sure touchdown pass in the third quarter. Running back Matt Forte was injured and missed a large part of the game.

It was a nightmare scenario come true for the Bears, and one fan on the Bears blog Windy City Gridiron put it in these terms:

"The Packers sucked for a while. The Bears sucked for a hell of a lot longer."

Take a look at the critical tweets of Cutler in the link. He was awful and heard it from the pundits. He somehow manages to have many bad games against the Packers.

Bears Vs. Packers Final Score: Green Bay Gets To Jay Cutler In 23-10 Win

Talking heads billed Thursday night's game between the Green Bay Packers and the Chicago Bears as a showdown for supremacy in the NFC North. Instead, the Packers sacked Jay Cutler seven times and picked off four of his passes on their way to a 23-10 win.

Follow @sbnation | Like SB Nation on Facebook | Subscribe to SB Nation YouTube

A short week and a gut-check loss to the 49ers in the season opener must have been exactly what the Packers defense needed. They sacked Cutler on the Bears' first offensive snap of the game, forcing a three-and-out. That set the tone for the game, and the two defenses did most of the heavy lifting until late in the second quarter.

Green Bay, leading 3-0, brought out the field goal unit with just under two minutes to play in the half. Tim Masthay took the snap and threw it to backup tight end Tom Crabtree for a 27-yard touchdown on the fake.

Packfake_medium

Cutler threw the first of four picks on the drive after that. Tramon Williams picked off a pass intended for Earl Bennett, the first of two interceptions for Williams, who was in shutdown form most of the night. In fact, Williams spent most of the game shadowing Brandon Marshall.

Marshall didn't need help from Williams to be a non-factor in this game. He let a touchdown pass slip through his hands in the end zone that forced the Bears to settle for a field goal at the end of a 13-play drive to start the second half of the game.

Nooobrandon_medium

Chicago's offensive ineptitude was highlighted by its offensive line. The unit had no answers for the Packer pass rush. Clay Matthews finished the game with 3.5 sacks, according to the press box numbers. That represents a new career-best for the fourth-year linebacker.

The Bears had a few highlights of their own, and the defense managed to pick off Rodgers once and limit him to a single touchdown. Julius Peppers had two of Chicago's five sacks on Rodgers.

Whatever positive momentum the Bears defense provided, it was overshadowed by the loss of Matt Forte, the Bears running back. He left the game with an ankle injury and did not return right when his team could have really used him. He finished with 49 yards on four carries.

Cutler took most of the heat for the Bears' woeful performance. Rightfully so. In spite of little to no protection from a criminally incompetent offensive line, he was forcing throws into double coverage. He managed one touchdown, in the fourth quarter, on a 21-yard throw to Kellen Davis.

The best news for the Bears might be the calendar. This was only their second game of the season. Next week, they draw the St. Louis Rams at home.

Green Bay travels to Seattle for a Monday night game against the Seahawks. Both the Bears and the Packers are now tied in the division standings at 1-1.

Game ball: Matthews is the easy pick here after his 3.5 sacks threw the Bears offensive line and Cutler into an existential crisis. An honorable mention goes to Williams for showing flashes of the shutdown corner Green Bay so lacked in 2011.

Jay Cutler Interception Turns Into Aaron Rodgers Touchdown

Things are getting out of hand in Green Bay. Jay Cutler threw his third interception of the game and Aaron Rodgers made him pay for it. On the play after the pick, Rodgers hit Donald Driver for a 26-yard touchdown pass that put the Packers up 23-3.

Lazer_medium

That interception put Cutler's QB rating at a stunning 8.6.

Maybe watching Driver, who knows a thing or two about dancing, celebrate in the end zone would make Cutler feel better.

Jermichael Finley Just Felt Sorry For Brandon Marshall

Maybe Jermichael Finley just felt sorry for Brandon Marshall. Minutes after the Bears receiver whiffed on a crucial catch in the end zone, the Packers tight end had the ball punched out of his hands by Charles Tillman, who also recovered the ball.

Punchpack_medium

That's Finley's second gaffe of the game following a dropped pass in the first half. Fortunately for the Packers, the Bears' total ineptness on offense made the resulting possession meaningless.

Matt Forte Injury: Bears RB Leaves Game Vs. Packers

Matt Forte has been Chicago's most productive player in Thursday night's game against the Bears, but it looks like his night may be done. Forte had carried the ball seven times for 31 yards, but on his last touch of the ball, he came up with an injury. Charles Woodson rolled up on Forte's ankle, and Forte had to be taken back to the locker room. Brad Briggs had an update on Forte's return:

Here's the play:

If the Bears are going to win tonight, it looks like they will have to do it without their leading rusher. Michael Bush will now have to carry the load for the Bears as they try to overcome a 10-point third quarter deficit.

Not What The Bears Were Looking For From Brandon Marshall

Jay Cutler had a touchdown, or should have had one anyway. Brandon Marshall beat the Packers' safety and got into the end zone unmolested. Cutler had him on a deep shot from about 30 yards, but Marshall let the ball fall right out of his hands.

It was not a pretty sight for the Bears and their NFC North hopes, which Marshall was supposed to help revive. Have a look at the play in question:

The Bears' receiver took some heat on Twitter for the not-so-clutch play.

Bears Vs. Packers, Update: Green Bay Leads 13-0 At The Half

The Green Bay Packers lead the Chicago Bears by a score of 13-0 in an early-season NFC North showdown in prime time on Thursday night. A touchdown off a fake field goal with just under two minutes left has been the lone offensive highlight for either team in a game marked mostly by defense.

Kicker Tim Masthay hit backup tight end Tom Crabtree, who ran it in for a 27-yard touchdown on the flawlessly executed fake. Green Bay got the ball back less than a minute later when Tramon Williams picked off Jay Cutler. The turnover resulted in the Packers' second field goal with a second left in the half.

Defense has been the rule, with both teams aggressive at the line of scrimmage. Chicago has a total of four sacks, including two from Julius Peppers. Green Bay has three sacks on the night so far, and Clay Matthews has been credited with one and a half.

Cutler is 4-for-9 with 37 yards and an interception. Aaron Rodgers is up to 14-for-21 for 128 yards after a slow start to the game. Cedric Benson has been an asset for Green Bay, rushing for 45 yards on 11 carries.

Packers Score On A Fake Field Goal

Offense has been hard to come by so far in Thursday night's game between the Packers and the Bears. Green Bay's field goal was the only scoring until the Packers struck again on special teams late in the second quarter.

Lined up in a field goal formation, Green Bay went for the fake. Punter Tim Masthay, the holder on the field goal unit, threw the ball to backup tight end Tim Crabtree, who ran it in for a 27-yard touchdown. Credit some excellent blocking from the Packers' linemen on the play too. Check it out.

Packfake_medium

If these two teams keep playing as tightly as they have been on defense, this could be the difference maker. Chicago needs to find some offense in the second half.

Packers WR Randall Cobb Runs Fast, Really Fast

Green Bay Packers wide receiver Randall Cobb is a multi-talented guy. He returns kicks, returns punts, works as a receiver and he also works out of the backfield. Cobb has been positioned behind the offensive line on a handful of snaps through a quarter-and-a-half of football on Thursday night.

On one play, he looked like he hurt his shoulder, but was back on the field in a flash. In the second quarter, Cobb burst out of the backfield for a 28-yard run that put the Packers on the Bears' 11-yard line, a ray of offense in what's been a defensive battle featuring more sacks than points.

Check out Cobb's 28-yard run.

Cobb_medium

Watch it again for good measure and imagine Yakety Sax playing in your head ... because it's in speedy motion, get it?

Cobb2_medium

Cobb was on plenty of people's radar Thursday afternoon as a potential breakout player. If this game is ever going to break wide open, it could be thanks to Cobb's wheels.

Jermichael Finley Can't Make The Catch

Dropped passes have been kind of a thing with Jermichael Finley, and he was at it again on Thursday night against the Packers.

Aaron Rodgers had him on 2nd-and-3 on a deep shot over the middle, but Finley let it bounce off his hands and onto the field. A penalty by the Bears gave the drive renewed life and got Finley off the hook. Green Bay finished the drive with a field goal.

Aaron Rodgers Gets A First Quarter Scare

The Packers and Bears are struggling to get anything going offensively in the first quarter. Aaron Rodgers is 2-for-6 with 37 yards, and he got a scare on the Packers' second offensive drive of the game.

On 2nd-and-16, rookie defensive end Shea McClellin eased his way around the left tackle and sacked Rodgers for a 10-yard loss. On the next play, Rodgers watched the ball slip out of his hand. Things got really concerning for the Packers and their fans when he went down on his right arm and his hand.

Aaronfail_medium \

Here's the sack the play before that one.

Shea_medium

So far, the Packers have had more luck running the ball. Cedric Benson has 27 yards on six carries, finding a few gaps in the Bears' cover-2 defense.

Still, as tight as the defenses have been, these two teams are capable of blowing the lid off of it at any minute.

Steve Mariucci Engulfed By Crazed Packer Fans

Green Bay Packers fans were sure glad to see Steve Mariucci ahead of Thursday night's game against the Chicago Bears. And why wouldn't they be happy to see him? Mariucci was Green Bay's quarterbacks coach from 1992 through 1995, but they probably remember him for his excellent work as the head coach of the Detroit Lions from 2003 through 2005, when he helped provide the Packers a couple easy wins every year.

Packers Inactives: Greg Jennings, James Starks Missing Vs. Bears

The Green Bay Packers have released their list of inactives for Thursday night's game against the Chicago Bears, and Greg Jennings is included, as he'll sit out the Week 2 contest with a groin injury.

Also sitting out will be running back James Starks, who is dealing with a case of turf toe. However, he could be "part of the plan" next week, according to head coach Mike McCarthy (via Packers beat writer Tyler Dunne).

In addition to Jennings and Starks, the Packers will be without WR Jarrett Boykin, S Sean Richardson, DB Davon House, LB Terrell Manning and DE C.J. Wilson.

Kickoff is scheduled for 8:20 p.m. ET from Lambeau Field.

Bears Inactives: Charles Tillman In, Matt Toeaina Out

The Chicago Bears take on the Green Bay Packers in Week 2's Thursday Night Football game, and like any team they'll be doing it without some of their players. Most of Chicago's significant injuries are on defense. Cornerback Charles Tillman will play, but the Bears will miss the efforts of starting defensive tackle Matt Toeaina, who will be replaced by backup Stephen Paea. Tillman may not be 100 percent after the shin injury he sustained vs. the Indianapolis Colts caused him to miss practice during the week.

Greg Jennings Injury: Packers WR Inactive For Bears Game

Green Bay Packers wide receiver Greg Jennings has been listed as inactive for Thursday night's game against the Chicago Bears, according to NFL.com's inactives report.

Jennings was listed as doubtful prior to the game, though he still held out hope that he would play. However, the Packers have decided to keep him out, after the star receiver was injured in the Packers' Week 1 loss to the San Francisco 49ers. Jennings was mostly held in check last Sunday, as he caught five balls for just 34 yards.

Donald Driver will likely get the majority of Jennings' reps, as the veteran receiver replaced Jennings last week following the injury.

Charles Tillman Injury: Bears CB Will Play Against Packers

Chicago Bears cornerback Charles Tillman will play in the team's Thursday night game against the Green Bay Packers, according to a Tweet from the NFL Network's Alex Flanagan. Tillman suffered a shin injury in the season opener against the Indianapolis Colts and missed the majority of the game. He also did not practice during the week.

That leaves a hole in Chicago's secondary, but it also leaves the Bears lacking on special teams. The Pro Bowl corner was a key blocker on the Bears' punt-return team, matching up with the opposing gunner.

Tillman is entering his 10th year in the league, all of which were played with Chicago. He picked up three interceptions and 12 passes defended in the 2011 season.
