We have plenty of laughs at the expense of the NFL replacement referees. The slightest faux pas, flinch or foible is magnified a thousand times just because -- well, for a lot of reasons, really. All their mistakes are televised and scrutinized. They're new to the job and NFL fans are already predisposed to hate them. There are things we should probably let slide, but don't. Like a simple slip of the tongue, for example.
During Sunday night's game between the San Francisco 49ers and the Detroit Lions, a referee asked for something called the "glamecock."
Now, who among us hasn't had some accident of speech in public? It's embarrassing and somewhat mortifying. But none of us were on national television when we misspoke. Can you imagine how ashamed you'd be?
