Browns Vs. Bengals, Week 2: Offense Shines But Defense Falters For Cleveland In Week 2 Defeat

Stay connected with SB Nation

Brandon Weeden looked like a completely different quarterback against the Bengals compared to his dreadful NFL debut in Week 1.

The Cleveland Browns fell to the Cincinnati Bengals, 34-27, but many positives can be taken from the game, most notably the production of their youthful offense. Weeden improved from a four interception, 5.1 quarterback rating performance last week to a two touchdown, zero interceptions and 114.9 quarterback rating performance Sunday. Trent Richardson also showed flashes of greatness, finding the endzone twice against Cincinnati.

Instead, the problem for Cleveland was the defense. The Bengals scored 34 points and picked apart the secondary at will. As Chris Pokorny of SB Nation's Cleveland Browns' blog, Dawgs By Nature, writes, the offense can be great, but the Browns have to improve the defense if they want to win ballgames.

The secondary was unbearable for Cleveland. I originally thought they would only be without Joe Haden, but it turned out that Sheldon Brown did not play either (if he did, he was very limited). The result was a comfortable day throwing the ball for Andy Dalton filled with missed tackles, soft coverage, and big plays for Cincinnati.

Do things go up or down next week against Buffalo? As long as this team has some offense, I think fans will be a bit more optimistic.

The Browns next contest comes next Sunday at home against the Buffalo Bills.
