After a 2-0 start to the season, the San Francisco 49ers came back to Earth against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday. Minnesota thoroughly outplayed the 49ers in a 24-13 win. The San Francisco offense turned the ball over three times and managed just 280 yards.
The vaunted 49er defense struggled in the Metrodome and allowed the Vikings to pile up 25 first downs and hold the ball for 33:28. Minnesota converted 7 of 14 third downs and averaged 4.5 yards per play.
Despite the loss, David Fucillo of Niners Nation believes that things aren't so bad in San Francisco. The 49ers likely needed a reality check.
Moving forward, there is plenty to learn from this loss (like how to stop a swing pass). The key will be how this team rebounds on Sunday against the New York Jets. I was dismayed by yesterday's loss to the Vikings, but given the ebb and flow of the NFL season, I was more annoyed than angry. Anger is more likely to develop if the team performs in a similar manner this coming Sunday against the Jets. This week will provide a learning environment the team hasn't had in a while. The key now will be taking what happened and learning from it. I have faith in the coaching staff, but it will make for a long week of waiting.
The 49ers will look to bounce back on Sunday at the New York Jets. San Francisco-New York is set for a 1 p.m. ET kickoff and will be televised by FOX.
