Santonio Holmes injury: X-rays negative for Jets wideout

The preliminary news following Santonio Holmes' scary foot injury isn't the worst, but the wide receiver isn't out of the woods yet. Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News is reporting that X-rays on Holmes' foot were negative, but any potential ligament damage is still unknown.

Holmes left in the second half during a play that could only be described as cripplingly depressing for Jets fans. Holmes slipped, hurt his foot without being touched, and let go of the ball, which was recovered and returned for a touchdown, the final nail in the coffin during the Jets' 34-0 loss to the 49ers Sunday.

Holmes' injury is exacerbated by the injury to his fellow wide receiver starter, rookie Stephen Hill, who missed the 49ers game with a hamstring injury he suffered during Week 3 against the Miami Dolphins. If they're without Holmes and Hill next week against the 4-0 Houston Texans, the Jets will start Chaz Schilens and Jeremy Kerley, and Patrick Turner will be the third wideout.
