Two of the top teams in the NFC square off in week one as the San Francisco 49ers head to Wisconsin to take on the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field. The match-up also pits one of the best offenses in the NFL against one of the stingiest defenses.
The Packers brought in Cedric Benson to replace Ryan Grant and still have Aaron Rodgers throwing to Jordy Nelson, Greg Jennings, Jermichael Finley and Donald Driver. But they will have to contend with the 49ers' Patrick Willis and Justin Smith, who helped lead a defense that was second in the league in points allowed a year ago.
Like much of last year, this game could come down to Alex Smith. The San Francisco QB had a career year last year and now he has Mario Manningham on the outside to give him another target. The backfield is deeper too, with Brandon Jacobs and LaMichael James joining Frank Gore. Still, not everyone is sold on Smith being able to replicate last year's strong performance.
As far as great offenses versus great defenses go, this is as good as it gets and it also has the added bonus of being a possible NFC playoff preview. We could see these two teams play each other again in January.
The game kicks off at 4:25 p.m. ET and it will be televised by FOX.
