Redskins Vs. Saints, Week 1: New Orleans Defense, Rushing Game Struggles In Loss

The New Orleans Saints did not appear ready in Week 1, getting torched by Robert Griffin III and the upstart Washington Redskins in a game they would lose 40-32. There were a few positives to take away from the game, but anyone who saw the action would tell you it was a disappointing performance from the Saints.

SB Nation's Saints blog, Canal Street Chronicles, took a look at some telling numbers from Sunday's game. Here are a few that really stood out.

52 - Pass attempts by Drew Brees. That's a lot.

1 - Saints defensive sacks. There should have been much more pressure on a rookie quarterback making his NFL debut.

10 - 32 - Rushing attempts and net yards rushing. It's hard to run the ball when you're playing from behind the entire game and putting yourself in long yardage situations thanks to penalties.

42 - Rushing yards by Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III. Ten more than the entire Saints team combined.

New Orleans was not at full strength against the Redskins and it is still very early in the season, but changes are going to be necessary if the team hopes to compete in a tough division.

Redskins Vs. Saints, Week 1: Redskins Fans Abuzz For Robert Griffin III

Redskins fans have been clamoring for a star quarterback for years, and if first impressions are anything to go by, they've finally found their man. Robert Griffin III did his thing today, passing for 320 yards and running for 42 more. After the 40-32 victory over the Saints, the fans over at Hog's Haven are buzzing with excitement after the Heisman Trophy winner's first game in the NFL.

Anyone catch anything on this rookie Griffin we have?

Supposedly he had a pretty good game………………………….

Still miss those draft picks many thought were too expensive to give up for one player?

Pierre Garcon was RGIII's favorite target, the pair connected four times for 109 yards. Alfred Morris chipped in with 96 yards on the ground. The Redskins will stay on the road next week as they take on the St. Louis Rams.

Redskins' rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III shined in his NFL debut with 320 yards passing, two touchdowns and zero interceptions on 19-of-26 passing. Griffin also picked up 42 rushing yards in the game. The Redskins never trailed after getting a first quarter field goal. Washington scored 10 points in each quarter of the game and led by multiple scores for long stretches, starting in the second quarter. Saints quarterback Drew Brees threw 52 passes in the game but completed just 24 for 339 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions.

Big Winner: RGIII was the clear winner in this game with 362 yards of offense, two touchdowns and zero turnovers in an upset win on the road in his first NFL start.

Pierre Garcon Injury: X-Rays Negative On Foot

Washington Redskins wide receiver Pierre Garcon injured his foot in the team's 40-32 season-opening victory against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, but head coach Mike Shanahan said after the game that X-rays were negative.

The fifth-year player out of Mount Union experienced some soreness, so the Redskins were cautious with him.

Garcon is expected to be a key component to what the Redskins do this season, with rookie Robert Griffin III at quarterback needing weapons to throw it to. RGIII's first career touchdown came by way of an 88-yard score from Griffin to Garcon.

Nick Sundberg Is Tough

You think being a long-snapper is easy. All they've gotta do is snap the ball once in a while and make a block. Can't be that hard, right. It can't take a ton of toughness or anything.

Redskins' long-snapper Nick Sundberg is one tough SOB.

This is your reminder that football is insane, and so are the players.

RG3 Has Arrived

If you missed it, Robert Griffin III is ready for prime time. The second pick in the 2012 NFL Draft looked comfortable, strong and relaxed in his first half against the New Orleans Saints, throwing for 196 yards and two scores to go with 30 rushing yards.

And SB Nation correspondent Amy K. Nelson wants to welcome RGIII to the party.

Griffin won over Redskins fans -- and fans of the NFL at large -- during the NFL Combine with his friendly demeanor and varied skillset. It's looking like Washington's decision to trade a stable of future draft picks to move up and select the former Baylor Bear might not be such a bad idea after all.

Meanwhile, the Cleveland Browns, who were also in the RG3 sweepstakes way back in April, are living with rookie Brandon Weeden, who is 7-19 for 68 yards and two interceptions. Hey, it's only one game, but I think the Redskins are pretty happy.

Something Goes Right for New Orleans: Block Punt for TD

This hasn't been a great day for New Orleans. They're getting eaten alive by Robert Griffin III, their best chance for a late TD was negated when Marques Colston fumbled out of the end zone, but finally things are looking up in the big easy.

Courtney Roby pounced on a blocked Sav Rocca punt, and appear to have put this game back within reach, now 20-14 closing in on halftime.

Robert Griffin III: Perfection Personified

This has to end soon, right? Currently RGIII is 10-for-11, 155 yards, and just threw his second touchdown of the day on a five yard pass to Aldrick Robinson.

Last year Cam Newton threw for over 400 yards in his career opener, and now Griffin III is giving that debut a run for its money.

Pierre Garcon Injury: Redskins WR Leaves Game, Return Questionable

Washington Redskins wide receiver Pierre Garcon left Sunday's game against the New Orleans Saints with a right foot injury. His return is questionable.

Garcon caught four passes before leaving the game, including an 88-yard catch-and-run touchdown from rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III in the first quarter to give Washington a 10-7 lead. Garcon also caught three passes from Griffin on the Redskins' opening drive that resulted in a field goal.

Garcon was Griffin's target early, but left the game in the first quarter temporarily due to an injury before returning for long enough to catch his touchdown.

Garcon was one of the Indianapolis Colts' top receivers the past three years before joining the Redskins. He had 70, 67 and 47 catches in 2011, 2010 and 2009 with Peyton Manning throwing to him for two of those years. Garcon played in all 16 regular-season games for the Colts a year ago.

Robert Griffin III Off To A Perfect Start

Robert Griffin III is not disappointing in his NFL debut with the Washington Redskins. With three minutes left in the first quarter, RGIII is a perfect 7-for-7, but it hasn't all been bubble screens. He put the Redskins on top of the Saints by a score of 10-7 with a beautiful 88-yard touchdown pass to Pierre Garcon.

Check out the video of RGIII's touchdown to Garcon below:

A debut against the Saints is not an easy task for a rookie, no matter how hyped they were coming into the league. There is still plenty of football left to play, but the legend of RGIII is well established.

Garcon is looking like RGIII's top target in the passing game. He has four catches. for 109 yards, accounting for most of 123 of RGIII's passing yards. He has also extended a few drives with his legs, rushing three times for 17 yards so far.

Jonathan Vilma Leads Saints Fans In 'Who Dat' Chant

Jonathan Vilma did not suit up for the New Orleans Saints for their season opener at home against the Washington Redskins, but the recently exonerated, sort of, linebacker was on the field prior to the game. The Saints rolled out the linebacker to lead the crowd in a rousing "Who Dat" chant after the coin toss.

New Orleans put Vilma on their roster exempt list. His return is unlikely to happen soon as he recovers from a knee injury. He had previously been suspended for the entire season by the NFL for his role in the Saints bounty program. An arbitration panel, a last step for player grievances in the collective bargaining agreement, lifted his suspension on Friday, as well as suspensions for the other three players.

Defensive end Will Smith, who was facing a four game suspension, is active for the Saints in Week 1. Linebacker Scott Fujita is inactive for the Browns. Anthony Hargrove was released by the Packers in August.

Alfred Morris Will Start At RB For Redskins, Per Reports

The Washington Redskins have announced their Week 1 starting running back, and his name is not Roy Helu.

After much speculation about the direction of the team's backfield, multiple outlets are reporting that Alfred Morris will be the starter for the team's road game against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday afternoon.

Morris, an undrafted rookie from Florida Atlantic University, beat out Helu and Evan Royster after the trio rotated through reps during the pre-season -- allowing the franchise to cut Tim Hightower in the process. Despite not being a highly regarded prospect out of college, Morris impressed the Redskins' coaching staff with his power rushing and blocking abilities, important attributes to possess when you're lining up behind a rookie quarterback.

But while the news is intriguing, it should not lead you to believe that Morris will get the majority of the Redskins carries just yet. He's still got plenty to prove, and Mike Shanahan is notorious for mixing up his backs throughout each game.

Last season, the Saints allowed more than 108 rushing yards per game last season, so perhaps there's an opportunity for Morris to impress and eat away at his opponent's defense in his first-ever NFL game.
