The Atlanta Falcons took control in the second half and cruised home to a 40-24 win over the Kansas City Chiefs in both team's season opener. Atlanta led 20-17 at the half, in a game that looked it had turned into a shootout. However, the Falcons' defense found its footing in the second half and capitalized on three turnovers by the Chiefs.
Matt Ryan threw for three touchdowns, with two of those going to Julio Jones. Tony Gonzalez caught the other touchdown in his return to Kansas City.
Matt Ryan shines:
Ryan completed 23 of 31 passes for 299 yards and three touchdowns. He spread the ball around to six different receivers with Jones and Roddy White combining for 195 receiving yards. Perhaps the most important part of Ryan's line for the Falcons was a big zero in the turnovers column
Matt Cassel struggles with turnovers:
After an outstanding first half that saw Cassel throw and run for a touchdown, he was bit by the turnover bug in the second half. Cassel threw a pair of interceptions in the second half and was also stripped from behind on a sack by John Abraham.
Tony Gonzalez still has it:
Fantasy Performer - Julio Jones:
Jones hauled in six passes for 108 yards and two touchdowns which will make his owners happy in Week 1.
Fantasy Dud Performance - Michael Turner:
Atlanta's ground game never got on track and, as a result, Michael Turner wasn't much help to his fantasy owners with an 11-carry, 29-yard performance.
