49ers Vs. Packers Game Recap: David Akers Enters Record Book In Niners' 30-22 Win

The San Francisco 49ers defeated the Green Bay Packers, 30-22, Sunday at historic Lambeau Field.

San Francisco quarterback Alex Smith opened the season with an efficient performance, completing 20 of 26 passes for 211 yards, two touchdowns and zero interceptions, but it was David Akers who made, perhaps, the biggest headline. Akers, the 49ers' kicker, tied an NFL record by connecting on a 63-yard field goal attempt as time expired in the first half. The low line-drive kick bounced straight up off the cross bar before coming back down and trickling through the uprights. San Fran led comfortably for most of the game, taking a 10-0 lead early in the second quarter, a 16-7 lead at halftime and a 23-7 advantage into the fourth quarter. Green Bay got back into the game with 11:16 remaining, when Randall Cobb returned an Andy Lee punt 75 yards for a touchdown. Aaron Rodgers completed a two-point pass to Jordy Nelson to pull the Packers within eight. After another 49ers score, Rodgers threw another touchdown pass, but with one last drive down by eight points, Green Bay couldn't complete the comeback. Rodgers completed 30 of 44 passes for 303 yards, two touchdown and an interception.

Big Winner: Any time a player ties an NFL record, he must be considered a big winner. That's exactly what Akers did with his 63-yard boot.

Packers running back Cedric Benson was the big loser. Benson wasn't able to make much of an impact and ran for 18 yards on nine carries. Rodgers surpassed that total, running for 27 yards on five carries.

Best Stat of the Game: Frank Gore provided an elite running back performance, picking up 112 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries. For those of you keeping score at home, that's an average of seven yards per carry.

Worst Stat of the Game: Continuing a theme from last season, the Packers had no rushing attack on Sunday. Green Bay managed to pick up just 35 yards on the ground.

Did They Cover The Spread? Nope. the Packers were 5.5-point favorites going into the game and lost by eight points. The game cleared the over of 46.5 as the teams combined for 52 points.
