NFL coaching rumors: Mike Holmgren will listen to offers

Mike Holmgren sounds like a man who's ready to coach again.

With several NFL head coaching positions opening up this week, former Super Bowl-winning coach Mike Holmgren is willing to listen to offers from any interested teams. Holmgren, who left his team president position with the Browns last month, told Ed Werder of ESPN, "If anyone is interested, I'll listen."

While he hasn't been coaching, Holmgren has been in the NFL for the past three years as a member of the Browns' front office. As president, he was the de facto owner of the Browns, representing the club at most league meetings and functions. When owner Randy Lerner sold the team to Jimmy Haslam, the writing was on the wall for Holmgren, who still had two years remaining on his contract. Haslam brought in Joe Banner as CEO, effectively replacing Holmgren, who was initially supposed to stay on through the 2012 season. But even that did not last, and Holmgren and the team officially parted ways at the end of November.

In his final meeting with the press in Cleveland, Holmgren sounded like a man wanting to get back into coaching. He repeatedly said the door was not closed on his life in the NFL, and his comments this week reiterate his apparent desire to return to the sidelines. There were also rumors midseason that he was angling for a job with the Cowboys.

Holmgren has not coached since 2008, when he lead the Seahawks to a 4-12 record. But with a Super Bowl win with Green Bay and a second Super Bowl appearance with Seattle, his name will continue to come up during NFL coaching carousel season.
