Andy Reid is reportedly close to finalizing a deal to become the next coach of the Arizona Cardinals.
The Arizona Cardinals have progressed in negotiations with Andy Reid and are closing in on a deal that would make him their next head coach, according to multiple reports. Mike Jurecki reports from Arizona that the Cardinals are "closing in" on the deal, while TV reporter Tim Ring says that the deal is "very close." Jason La Canfora of CBS also tweeted that he expects Reid to end up with the Cardinals job.
Revenge of the Birds addressed the reports, writing that the Reid hire would still leave multiple questions in Arizona:
When team president Michael Bidwill addressed the media on Monday about the decision to part ways with both Ken Whisenhunt and general manager Rod Graves, he did reveal that Reid was a candidate for the job.
There has not been any report that he was interviewed.
Reid, if hired, will only have one offensive coach on staff -- tight ends coach Freddie Kitchens.
If this proves to be true, there will be two very important questions left to be answered -- who will be the team's GM and what will the fate of defensive coordinator Ray Horton be.
After 14 years in Philadelphia, Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie fired Reid on Monday morning. The move was expected, and there were reports that Reid was already making calls around the league to put together a staff for one of several other expected openings. It was initially suspected that the Chargers might make a run at Reid, who lives in the area. But reports surfaced that Dean Spanos and San Diego were leaning in a different direction.
The Cardinals fired Ken Whisenhunt and almost the entire offensive coaching staff on Monday morning, creating the opening in Arizona. But it appears that the job won't be open for long, as Reid, a coach with vast experience, could land on his feet shortly after his removal in Philadelphia.
