49ers sign Billy Cundiff

Matt Stamey-US PRESSWIRE

The 49ers signed the eight-year veteran kicker after David Akers missed two field goals in the team's regular-season finale last Sunday.

The San Francisco 49ers signed kicker Billy Cundiff on Tuesday afternoon, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

The decision to ink the eight-year veteran Cundiff comes after kicker David Akers struggled in the team's 27-13 win over the Arizona Cardinals last Sunday, missing field goals of 40 and 44 yards.

Cundiff was released during training camp by the Baltimore Ravens after he was beaten out by rookie Justin Tucker. He later signed with the Washington Redskins, where he struggled, hitting just 7-of-12 field goals in five games before being released again. In his last full season with the Ravens, Cundiff hit 28-of-37 attempts (75.7 percent) and made 38-of-38 extra point attempts. Cundiff's career-longest field goal is a 56-yard kick he made in 2005 while a member of the Dallas Cowboys.

The 49ers also brought in former Carolina Panthers kicker Justin Medlock for a tryout on Monday. Medlock appeared in 10 games for the Panthers, but misses in three consecutive games led to his release.
