NFL coaching rumors: Bears ask to interview Packers OC Tom Clements

USA TODAY Sports

Chicago reportedly has interest in long-time assistant coach currently calling plays for the Packers.

Add Green Bay offensive coordinator Tom Clements to the list of candidates in the Chicago Bears' coaching search.

According to David Haugh of the Chicago Tribune, the Bears have requested permission to interview Clements to possibly lead the Bears following the firing of Lovie Smith after Chicago failed to make the NFC playoffs this season.

Clements has been an assistant coach at various stops for 20 years starting out as a quarterbacks coach at his alma mater Notre Dame in 1992. Clements has been working with quarterbacks in Green Bay since 2006, successfully handling the transition from Brett Favre to Aaron Rodgers for the Packers before taking over the offensive coordinator duties this season.

Green Bay's offense ranks fifth in the NFL in points, scoring over 27 points per game with Clements calling the plays. Haugh adds that the Bears showed an interest in Clements as an offensive coordinator in 2010, but as a position coach at the time, Green Bay was able to block their NFC North rival from raiding their sidelines.
