Detroit Lions announce changes to coaching staff

Special teams coordinator Danny Crossman will not return to the team.

The Detroit Lions announced multiple coaching changes Monday, according to the team's official website.

The Lions hired Curtis Modkins to be their running backs coach and run game coordinator. They also hired Bobby Johnson to be their tight ends coach.

Tim Lappano moves from tight ends coach to the wide receivers coach, while Jeremiah Washburn moves from assistant offensive line coach to offensive line coach.

The Lions also announced that Danny Crossman, who was the special teams coordinator, will not be back with the team in 2013.

Modkins joins the Lions after spending the last three seasons with the Buffalo Bills. He was the offensive coordinator and running backs coach in Buffalo. Under Modkins' watch this season, the Bills had the fourth-best rushing attack on average (5.0 yards) in the NFL.

Johnson was the tight ends coach with the Jacksonville Jaguars last season. Before that, he was the assistant offensive line coach for two seasons with the Bills.
