Jake Roth-US PRESSWIRE

The San Diego Chargers announced on Friday that they are retaining their longest tenured assistant coach, defensive coordinator John Pagano.

According to sources, the San Diego Chargers have been able to retain their longest-tenured assistant coach, defensive coordinator John Pagano, under new head coach Mike McCoy. Pagano has been affiliated with the Chargers since 2007, when he was hired as a linebackers coach. He held that title through the 2011 season and then was promoted to defensive coordinator prior to the 2012 season.

Even though the Chargers struggled through the 2012 season, finishing with a 7-9 record, Pagano was able to coach the defense to a No. 9 overall ranking, finishing with a No. 18 ranking against the pass and a No. 6 ranking against the run. Staying with Pagano will be defensive line coach Don Johnson, linebacker coach Joe Barry and assistant linebacker coach Greg Williams, according to the Sports Xchange's Jenna Laine.

It will be important for the Chargers to keep their defensive coaching staff intact now that they will have to face the Broncos with Peyton Manning twice a season.
