Bears coaching rumors: Dave Toub interviews for head coach opening

The long time special teams coach interviewed for the Dolphins job last season.

The Chicago Bears have interviewed special teams coach Dave Toub for their head coach vacancy, according to Dan Pompei of the Chicago Tribune.

The Bears are trying to replace Lovie Smith, who was fired on Dec. 31.

Toub has been the Bears' special teams coach since 2004. In 2007, he was named the special teams coach of the year.

It isn't the first head coach job Toub has interviewed for. He visited with the Miami Dolphins for their opening last season, but the team decided to hire Joe Philbin.

Toub is one of 13 known candidates in the running to become the next head coach of the Bears. It was announced Monday that Hall of Fame linebacker and former San Francisco 49ers' coach Mike Singletary will also interview for the job.

Smith coached the Bears for the last nine seasons. He led the team to three first place finishes in the NFC North, as well as a Super Bowl appearance in 2006.

The Bears finished 10-6 this season but missed the playoffs.
