Mike Pettine will not be returning as defensive coordinator of the New York Jets in 2013, head coach Rex Ryan told reporters during his press conference on Tuesday.
Pettine, 46, had served as the defensive coordinator for the team for four seasons, but his contract was set to expire during the 2013 offseason. Many speculated that Pettine would be out, as he was granted permission to interview for the Buffalo Bills defensive coordinator vacancy, and Ryan confirmed those beliefs on Tuesday, telling reporters that he would be looking for new offensive and defensive coordinators during the offseason.
Ryan told reporters that he wishes Pettine luck, but hopes that he'll get a job outside of the AFC East. "I wish him all the best, unless he goes to Buffalo," Ryan said. "I love Mike. I respect him."
The 2012 Jets finished eighth in the NFL in fewest yards allowed, but were No. 20 in points allowed. It was a similar result as the 2011 season, when the Jets finished No. 5 in total defense, but finished No. 20 in points allowed.
