Dave Gettleman named Panthers GM

Bob Donnan-USA TODAY Sports

It's been confirmed that the Carolina Panthers have found their new general manager. The team announced they hired former New York Giants personnel executive Dave Gettleman.

New York Giants senior pro personnel analyst, Dave Gettleman, was named General Manager of the Carolina Panthers on Wednesday.

Gettleman has 25 years of NFL experience, and has spent the past 15 of them with the New York Giants. During his tenure with the team, the Giants brought in a franchise quarterback and won two Super Bowl championships. The long-time Giants executive was believed to be a favorite of the Panthers and first choice of Ernie Accorsi, per Jason LaCanfora.

Accorsi, a former GM of the Giants, was hired by the Panthers in November to be a consultant in their GM search. Gettleman was not the first candidate from the Giants to interview for the Panthers gig. New York's director of college scouting Marc Ross was also considered for the position.

Whoever the Panthers decided to bring in, they would be limited right away in what they could do. The organization openly committed to another year with head coach Ron Rivera, and they already have their guy behind center. Carolina is not far from fielding a contender, and they believe Gettleman is the guy that can bring in the missing pieces.

As if the NFC South wasn't competitive enough with Atlanta, New Orleans and Tampa Bay, Carolina is fixing to make a run with this kind of move.
